It’s neither a gay ‘gay’ movie nor an entertaining romp about straight men. Parvati Balagopalan’s Straight is a slow, sleepy and somewhat convoluted story of a man’s confusion about his sexual identity.
Pinu Patel ( Vinay Pathak ), a restaurateur in London, is cruelly over-aged to be a virgin. His only shot at marriage misfired when his traditional Indian bride-to-be eloped with her lover on the wedding day, further plunging the introvert Pinu into a complex about his personality, or the lack of it.
Enters Kamles (Anuj Choudhry), a happy-go-lucky guy who takes the job of a chef and part-time stand-up comedian at Pinu’s restaurant. Also steps in the gorgeous Renu ( Gul Panag ) who takes up the job of cashier at the restaurant.Even as Pinu has troubles getting used to the glamourous cashier, he’s thrown into a new abyss of confusion when his slaphappy chef Kamles hugs and kisses him (on lips) after winning a lottery ticket.
Doubts begin popping in Pinu’s head. Is he gay? No, how could he be! He’s straight. But then, why hasn’t he been attracted to the sexy cashier?
Questions galore. And it would take more than just acute introspection for Pinu for sort out the tangle.
The movie is no laugh riot. It begins well with some intelligently executed sequences but soon settles down to a lazy, relaxed pace as the screenplay wobbles from one character to another. Not only is there a notable absence of some laugh-worthy humour, there’s no attempt on the director’s part to make the characters in the story relatable. The music and the background score are amateurish.
Only the actors manage to salvage the movie to some extent. Vinay Pathak, likeable as usual, is darn good as a 30-plus virgin stuck in a dilemma over his sexuality. Gul Panag and Anuj Chowdhry deliver up to the mark.
But the movie, all in all, is pretty forgettable.
